So how was the house looking last night? I've spent the last two evenings rebuilding fence!

From James Holt on Thu, Jan 24, 2008 at 13:12:56

Still? Hopefully the rain doesnt make things worse. There are tons of homes out there especially in your neck of the woods. We looked at the one two houses up from you last night. Want to be neighbors? Looks like im out of the running for several weeks. fractured bone in my left foot. Son of a @#$^%@#. What should i do so i dont loose all my training? Im really bumed out about this.

From Dave Holt on Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 09:44:39

How in the world did you do that? And how did you find out? Just hurting and went in to get it checked out?

You need to be biking or swimming a lot then - Equal time to what your runs would be.

From James Holt on Fri, Jan 25, 2008 at 13:03:32

Started hurting last Mon during speed work at track. Got worse so i had it checked out. Its not bad but enough that its pretty tender when i step down on that foot. I think my last run made it a lot worse than it was.

From Dave Holt on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 15:37:34

I was thinking about when you start again - running that is. What type of mileage are you thinking? And don't plan on kicking the bike yet; you should keep it going to supplement whatever mileage you are allowed/able to run until you get back to full strength.

From James H on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 16:47:40

Im not sure on mileage. I wasnt told any specific amount, just to take it easy. What do you think? I know i need to take it easy but I want to do good in Moab in March. I was thinking about keeping the bike workouts in addition to the running until I get fully healed.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

Hello - is this James that wrote that - I mean the "did some weights" part???

Nice workout buddy!

From Dave Holt on Fri, Feb 01, 2008 at 10:08:40

I would say start off with only a mile for about a week - Ahhh, I know that sounds so little, but you have to make sure that the foot is actually getting better. Then the next week take it to 2 for 3 days and then 3 for the last 3 days if there is absolutely no pain. Then finally in the 3rd week you can go 4 for 1/2 the week and then 5 for 1/2 the week. Again with absolutely no pain. After that move it back on up to where you need to be. I know it blows for your training, but remember Moab isn't your primary goal in running, it is just another step (and in this case it is going to be a step with a nice healthy foot!).

From James Holt on Fri, Feb 01, 2008 at 12:03:59

Chris - "Some weights" being not a whole lot with not much weight. :)

Dave - Thats what I'll do then thanks. Should i keep the bike miles/time up there or increase/decrease?

Comments
From Dave on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 23:32:25

Perfect day out wasn't it. Keep the bike mileage up for a couple more weeks. At least until your back to 5 or more - you need to keep the fitness level as much as possible.

From James Holt on Tue, Mar 04, 2008 at 11:33:39

Yeah except your runs are usually double that in length and twice a day. I can only manage that after a days rest and for one run. That floor was a ton of fun. Everyone came out with at least one good war wound. Ive never seen flooring be able to break metal tools before. Finally got my butt out of bed for a morning run. Ran down to the river trail and out to Bloomington and back. I didnt even need any liquid because of all the gnats I swallowed. Yummy. It works best when they hit you right in the eye at mach 10 cause then the nutrients go straight to your blood stream for a quick boost of energy. Good stuff.

From dave holt on Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 13:03:51

The River Trail is infamous (more than famous!) for its tasty gnat selection!

So did you get signed up?

From James Holt on Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 13:38:07

When you have gnat juice you can run for days.

Im all signed up and ready to run walk and possibly crawl to a wonderful finishing time. Im not sure when I get done with my meetings. I might need to authorize you to pick up my packet for me.

From dave holt on Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 18:52:11

Okay, how do we do that?

From Ally Holt on Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 19:35:10

James, don't ask Dave to do anything that requires him to find out where to go or what time things start!! I always ask him what time races start, and he NEVER knows! He thinks it is funny, but it makes me crazy. But yes, we will pick up your packet, if that is ok with race people. You never know sometimes!

I had to make an unscheduled bathroom stop at mile 3 and that threw me off a little. Time was right on with my PR if im not mistaken. It was wierd leading the way and not really knowing where to go at each turn. 1 - 6.09 Watched Dave pull away. Dustin was just ahead of me and I just wanted to stay within a reasonable distance of him.

2 - 6.09 I was wondering if I went out to quick at this point cause I was sucking air big time. Just trying not to fall too far behind.

3 - 6.13 Still battling the breathing. Passed Dustin right around here. I think he stopped to drink.

4 - 6.35 I can tell that Im slowing but cant get moving. Dustin passed me somewhere on this mile. The juice is really gone.

5 - 6.45 Just trying to stay as close to Dustin as possible but he starts to pull away.

6 - 6.21 Talked myself into picking it up. Once again sucking air through every opening i can find to get more.

.39 2.33 Dave came back and tried to help me finish strong. It helped but I couldnt get much more out of the old body.

Over all I feel good about this race. Everyone was measuring it long ( I got 6.39) so the times where all off. Looks like I need to work on getting the lungs built up. My legs felt alright but I could not get enough air.

Club run down the marathon course. Marci jumped out at 12 and I got out at 15. Dave and Logan went up to 20. Started out feeling like 7:30 was going to be about it for the whole run but I started feeling it and picked it up. Hit a couple 5:50 miles in the middle and avg out 6:53. I kept thinking Dave and Logan where going to come blowing by but the extra five miles was enough to keep them off me. Other than getting a bloody nose and looking like someone shot me cause of all the blood it was a great run. Highest mileage week yet!!

It was a beautiful moring for a race. Nice and cool. The garmins battery died so I didnt have that to help keep me on pace. Steve O said he was going for 36-37 so I figured I would just hang around him and Id be ok. That stratagy was thrown out the window about 10 steps into the run. There was no way I was going to keep that kind of pace for the whole run so I just tried to keep within eye sight of Steve and the other guy and hoped for the best. There was a long old hill right in the middle of the race and man did that take some mental jucie to make up. Passed a home with several dogs out front and got a bit concerned but after seeing the first 2 guys make it by without injury I figured I was ok. If they would have wanted me I couldnt have stopped them. Tried to get closer to number 2 guy on the downhill and the last couple miles but he had more go and I was huffing and puffing like I'd just smoked a pack. I was hoping for a lot better time than this but even Steve O was off by a couple minutes so I wont kick myself to hard. Bit disscuraging as my marathon goal pace is faster than this race pace and I dont know if Im up for 26 miles at that speed.

From Dustin on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 16:42:41

Good job on the race. Remember you were running this race at 6500 ft elevation so I'm sure that might have affected your time a little. Also, sounds like the hill made the course a little slower. I wouldn't get too concerned about your marathon time at this point. You've been training good all summer and I think things will come together nicely for you on marathon day.

From MarcieJ on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 20:07:04

Good job James! Dont be discouraged at all. I heard it was pretty tough course. You will be able to hold your marathon race pace easier at SG. You will be just fine!

From Superfly on Sat, Aug 16, 2008 at 20:23:22

Good job! The elevation is the key in this race. It's way harder to push out good times up in the mountains.

From wildbull on Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 11:50:21

In racing you will find that each course will have its own time. This race for instance had elavation and that Hill. If you keep traing your going to do great. good race. 3 place is awesome.

From Mike Warren on Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 21:08:08

James, no doubt tough course and major uphill gravel road. That is not a bad time at all. After the race, we ran to Veyo. Even taking it easy, those first 2 miles were tough on the breathing. You will be just fine in the marathon. By the way, what is your time goal?

Easy mile warm up. Decided that if I could keep Ryan and David S in sight I would be ok.  I could see them if I squinted really hard but they just pulled away till I lost sight completely. The first several miles were ok but I fell apart on mile 10. I was able to get going again for miles 11 and 12 but slowed down again on mile 13. I was wondering what I was doing all this for during the last of this race. I was trying to not look at my watch every couple steps so I didnt realize that I was doing better than I thought until I saw the timer at the finish line. Did a few miles to cool down after. Once it was all done I felt better about everything. Second fastest half marathon race ever for me so not as bad as I was thinking during the run. Also won 2nd place overall in the SGRC race series so that was fun.

PR for me by 30 minutes. Now that makes me a happy boy. Wow. What can you say about today? A bit o' rain and wind makes for a hard run. I talked with Marci for a sec before the start and thought that Id run the first several miles with her. That way we could help each other keep a good pace and after that I would start picking it up. That didnt happen. I lost her after several steps then found her again and then I just felt so good I picked up the pace. Ran a few miles with Ryan and the Bull and figured Id stick with them and that would give me a good time. That didnt work either. I was still feeling frisky so I sped up more. Dispite the rain (actually I love the rain. Id run in it all the time if I could) and wind I was feeling really good until about mile 21. I held it together pretty well until the last two miles and then I slowed noticeably. It was fun to run by people and know they where cheering for you cause there was no one else around. That helps. Even though I didnt get as low a time as I hoped for (but everyones times where off so we all got the shaft there) I still feel really good about this run. I ran smart and just followed my body and kept positive. I wont give splits cause thats alot of spliting.

I think it is totally in the cards for you (and more) with another solid year of base through the winter and those next steps in the summer.

Awesome job!

Everyone that finished this monster did AWESOME no matter the time. Any one of us could have (and probably wanted to) stopped and said "thats enough. Why am I beating my body up for this?" But not one person did. Even facing times off by more than we would have though possible considering the work we put in. Each person kept on. That inspires me. You guys ROCK!!!

I wasnt quite sure how this race was going to pan out. I woke up yesterday and could tell i was coming down something. Took a big afternoon nap and just hoped that I didnt feel to crapy on race day. Woke up feeling ok but not 100% and just figured what the heck we'll see what happens. Ran a little over a mile warm up and had some troubling tightness in the right hip that made me nervous.

1 - 5:22 Hip was really feeling weird and I thought I might have to just back off.

2 - 5:37 Hip pain was gone and I was just trying to let the downhill take me

3 - 6:16 Not quite as steep a downhill here. Slowed to a more realistic pace.

4 - 6:55 Starting up the slight incline of west canyon. To much slow down.

5 - 6:47 I dont think it was any steeper throught here I just dropped the ball

6 - 6:14 Coming back down the canyon I was able to get back to a decent pace.

7 - 6:46 A bit of up hill here that slowed me up once again. Got a horid cramp in my right side. Havent had one of those for years. That made it a little hard to concentrate on running.

8 - 6:18 The cramp had worked itself out by this time and I was able to get back to a more reasonable pace on the downhill coming out of Snow Canyon.

9 - 6:29 Trying to get the juice up to pass the two guys in front of me.

10- 6:39 I was able to pass both guys in here and was feeling pretty good.

11 - 6:49 Slowed on the up hill in this section. Got a little nervous at one point cause I couldnt see anyone in front of me and didnt know if I was going the right way. Looked back and saw a few guys and hoped I wasnt leading them a stray.

12 - 6:35 I could see Dustin up ahead of me and tried to pick it up to see if I could catch him.

13 - 6:32 Caught Dustin and kept trying to push through to the end. Thought I was going faster that this but oh well.

Over all I feel good about this run. I didnt pr but was right at the same time as the last 2 halfs. I really wanted to get a sub 1:20 but that didnt work out. I need to work on getting my times to be a bit more consistant. I guess thats where being more consistant in training comes in to play.

Hey Jame, once again the weekly runs are paying off. Keep it up!

From wildbull on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 01:10:02

james having the time you had today tells alot. it shows that your still in great shape. I think 120.00 is very close. Painters could be your race.

Way to go James. Even feeling a bit sick.

From Michelle N. on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 12:45:42

Great work! I am from SLC and had no idea what to expect on this course. It was a tough one but fun.

From Dustin on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 13:25:46

Great job on the race, I wish I would have had a little more in the tank the last mile and could have gone with you. By that point I was pretty beat up. My legs are really sore today.

From Chris on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 15:31:44

Man - a whole week of no posts?? Have you quit running already - I guess no time for this now working there huh? Get back to posting!!!

Ran out to Coral Canyon with Dave this morning. I havent run in the morning for a while and it was nice. Crisp and cool. We havent run together for awhile so it was fun to get caught up and have someone to chat with. The left calf was tight for a lot of the run but doesnt feel to bad now. Havent hacked up a lung yet so maybe the chest cold is finally going away.

City Wells. Ran all the way out to the first pump house today. This is a bit of a workout cause its uphill for the whole way out but its nice to get away from traffic and people. Coming back is fun cause of the downhill.

Was the dirt puffy or nice?

From JamesH on Wed, Nov 26, 2008 at 17:07:07

Not to bad but starting to get puffy. Todays rain should help with that

Middleton and then some. I could really get used to running in the middle of the day. No rush or worring about getting back in time for anything. Just running until the body says "thats good." Pace was faster than it felt. A good solid enjoyable run.

where was the truck at?

From JamesH on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 23:19:44

Next to the old Bargin Barn. Across from that christian chapel. It rolled and someone was on the ground. Looked for it in the paper but didnt see anything. Hope no one was seriously hurt.

Up to Highland and then up the Parkway. Quite the hill run tonight. Felt good and even dipped into the mid 5's for a while just for fun. How anyone can run a whole marathon at that pace is just amazing to me.

Meet up with Bill, Dave and Steve and ran over Formaster and back along Mall Dr. Steve tried to kill a couple kids when he jumped into the pile of leaves that -unknown to him - they had buried themselves in. Good stuff. Then did another mile with Dave. Not to bad a run but my knees are still getting tender after about 5 miles.

For some reason I thought I would run out to towards Little Black Rock and back today. Took some gloves cause it was supposed to be getting cold today. By the time I got out 6 miles I was down to just shorts. In the middle of Dec and no shirt. I was getting some crazy looks from people driving by. Weird. Had fun and felt really good until about mile 13. I think I was getting dehydrated cause I didnt take any water. Stupid I know. Had to walk for half a mile then was able to crawl home.

Barry - Not on the same run. Right square in the back by both. Stupid people who suck. Thats why im not such a fan of running after dark anymore. Used to love it but now Im just waiting to get slammed by something every time a car comes by.

Great run out to Quail Creek with Dave. Had fun talking about everything and enjoying the brisk morning. Havent gone this far in a while and I was a bit nervous about how Id hold up but I felt really good and didnt hold Dave back too much I dont think. I was feeling really good about myself  until I got home and Emily made fun of my skinny legs that dont even fill out the running tights.

Everything about that place is a joke. They will let kids run wild and ruin machines and charge you and arm and a leg for it, but when a kid is actually working out AND being watched they kick you out! IDIOTS! I really don't like how they portray our fair city of Dogtown.
