Millcreek. Had another rain day so I wanted to do some exploring while the sand was runable. Turned off the trail at a wash just before the pumps and ran up to the top of it then hike/power walked up to the top of the hill. Nice 500 foot climb in 1/3 of a mile. Beautiful views especially to the north with the clouds blowing across the cliffs. Hiked off the north side and ran down another wash to the north pump station then home. So much fun to explore this beautiful area.

Wasn't sure how today would play out but I had hopes that the legs from the Butch Cassidy would be there and last the whole run. Didn't turn out that way but considering I havent done any work to push by body in over3 months I shouldnt complain. Didnt see any one familiar aside from Ben VanB at the start but I knew that there would be several guys that would be up in front of me and thats how it started and stayed the whole run. The starting pace felt slow and Im glad I didnt go out any harder cause the speed I took off at was too much and it came back to bite me the last few miles. Saw Dave at the first turn and he told me to try and stick with the guys just in front of me so thats what I tried to do. That lasted about 1 mile before they started to pull away but I keep pushing and feeling good about how things where going. Caught a guy at around mile 6 just as we turned onto Bringham rd but we didnt stay together for very long. I wanted to push and try and catch the guys further up and he fell back aways. I didnt make any headway on catching people because of the hill but I did keep pace because of the push. Most of the rest of the run was survival mode. I heard Dave across the river as I got onto the trail and that helped give me a boost but when I made a turn a short time later I was able to look back and could see several guys/gal (i think Amber was in that group) gaining. Made it almost to the bridge before getting passed by 2 guys and that finished sucking the wind out of the sails. Tried to keep close to the 2nd guy but I could tell I was slowing and loosing the mental battle to push.  Dave picked me up at about 11.5 and pushed me till the end (Big thanks for that Dave!!) and forced me to finish strong when I wanted to just call it.

Waited for the awards and got confused when they annonced someone else taking 7th place and then didnt call me for an age division award. I just wanted to go home but ended up talking to Aaron and found they had put me in the 5k during registration. They fixed that and were kind enough to give me an award even though they had already handed them out incorectly to someone else. So overall a decent start to the year. Now its time to start getting some speed in the legs.

Millcreek. Didnt plan on going this far but I got a massage last night and the legs felt lots better plus we got some moisture and I wanted a break from studying so I decided to take the garmin and go up the creek bed I ran up last year to measure the distance. Not sure if I went up the same canyon as last time as I saw formations today that I dont recall seeing before. Although it has been over a year so who knows for sure. Had a ton of fun enjoying the views, clouds racing just above and the clean air. Got towards the top and it started to get steep and the creek bed was dissapearing and turning into a mountain side so I stopped. Attempted to hike up a smaller hill to see if there was a view but the clouds had settled down low and I about got stuck on a cliff side so I bagged that idea. The way back wasnt as much fun as I started feeling the distance and lack of recovery from Saturday but I knew that was going to happen so I just tried to keep positive and enjoy the fact that I was able to get out for such a nice run.

Just as the paved trail turns and heads down the hill into the houses on the east end of coral canyon there is a dirt path that goes over the ridge and down into the wash then under the freeway in the culvert.

Really pretty area. Once I got to where I turned around I was enjoying the view and feeling special about the fact that not many people see the area. Coming back down the wash I ran into three hikers with dogs and two families with young kids in backpacks heading up. I guess Im not near as special as I thought I was. Ran a short warm up cause it was close to race time when I arrived. Went out with Dave and the XC boys figuring if I stuck around them id hit a good time. Legs didnt have much energy and the down hills felt hard from the very start. They boys pulled away coming down Coral Canyon and I couldnt stick with them. Started getting frustrated mentally and had to keep reminding myself these kids are 25+ years younger than me and Im already running on tired legs from earlier in the week. Tried to hold it together but really got angry at the lack of course marking/help at an out/back section by the park. Nobody was giving clear direction and I had no clue where to go so I just turned around and called it good. The rest of the run was pretty crappy and hard. Tried to finish strong hoping to break into the 16s but the damage was done.

Good race on a tired body I guess.

City Wells/Cinder Cone. Started at the trail head and ran up to just past the Sand Hill turn off. Continued north on a "trail" where the old road used to be before the reserve and went along the south side of the cone then up the wash towards the cliffs. Fun run but all sand aside from going up the cone so it was really really slow going. On the way back I came up the north side of the cone to check out the view which is pretty cool. Then I came back down the north side and back the way I came in. About crashed a couple times and only shear luck saved me each time. Somewhere along the way I got jabbed by a stick and it broke off in my leg. Didnt find that until I got into the shower. So all in all an eventfull run.

Now that was an adventure! Legs are shot but I came away with only 1 small blister so I count that as a win. Spent most of the run trailing Logan. He decided to hold back as we headed into Suicidal Tendencies so I pulled away and ran alone until he caught me just before the finish. Had lots of fun, fueled good until the end and aside from crashing hard on miles 32 and 33 I did pretty well I think. Had to walk for a while on both those miles as I lost all energy and couldnt run in a straight line. I downed my final 2 chomps even though my stomach said no and once those hit I was able to kind of jog to the finish. Might even do this distance again some day.

It was warm enough that I was shirtless and sweating big time after a mile and glad I brought the water. The climbing started just after 2 and didnt stop until I turned around. Then it started snowing up on top and I was freezing and wondering if Id ever warm up then warm enough that I was shirtless once I came off the hill. Got to love southern Utah spring weather. Lost the trail a few times but was able to backtrack and find it. Could be a fun trail but its so covered with loose rock that its super hard to run without twisting your ankle.

I turned around to look back and a car was coming down the trail so I ran back and made sure they didnt run him over. Watched him move off the trail for a few minutes on the way back.

Wind was blowing all night and sadly didnt stop for the race. Jogged up to the start for a warm up and hoped for the best. Tried to not go out to hard as Ive done 0 speed work for months. Most of the race was a struggle to keep the pace down but there were patches of smooth sailing. Loved those patches, didnt care for the rest. The base is there now its time to work on the speed.

Bowling Alley/Sandhollow. Ran around the lake with Mike, Bill, Dustin and Scott. Went really easy on the way out which was nice. Mike turned around going up the hill and kept going till I hit 7.5 then turned around to catch back up with him. Either he put the peddle down or I went further up the hill than I thought cause I sped way up and it took me almost 2.5 to catch him. I was still feeling good when I caught him so I kept the pace up and sped up for the next few but then the wheels came off at around 13. It was a struggle to keep running because the energy was gone. Slowed way down and struggled to get back to the car.  Almost puked for most of the last mile. I never ever do that so that was weird. Came home and was craving pickles and chocolate milk which actually sat well on my stomach.

Had a really fun race at the Little Hollywood Half in Kanab this morning. Fist place and set a course record ( yes its only a 2 year old race and not much competition but Ill take it).The race is downhill but has some good roll and climb in the 3.5-8.5 mile section. Ran with Levi Hawks for the first 3 then alone till the end. Felt really good till about 6 then I could feel the legs try and go away. Worked hard to keep a steady pace and not slow. Not sure if having Warrant - Uncle Toms Cabin stuck in your head for the night before and all during a race helps or hinders performance. It felt like I was on pace for a 1:15-1:16 but no such luck. Nice to get a win dispite the slower than wanted time. Greatful to still be able to run, race and have such a good time doing it.

Felt pretty good on the way out but I knew the way back would be hard cause the body was tired. Jumped over some shrubs in the trail as I was heading up Cottonwood and about landed on a rattler. He was not happy about being startled and I screamed like a little girl. Didnt get to close as he was striking like crazy but he was a pretty (evil) looking guy. As I came back along the trail I slowed and walked around the area he was at and was keeping an eye and ear out for him but he still startled me cause I had passed him before he rattled. Stupid jerk was hiding in the bushes again. I cursed him and headed on my way. That kept me energized for a few miles but then I ran out of water and was dead so the last several miles drug a bit. This was the 20th aniversary of my first marathon and I thought it would be fun to cut off 1 hour from my initial time of 3:36 on this race. Didnt happen but I still ran as well as i could. Just didnt train as hard as was needed to hit that time.

I felt like I was pushing more during the first half but still came across the half at 1:21. So pretty much the same as always. The second half was brutal and by about 22 I was all but finished. Dave ran with me for a touch trying to get me moving but I just couldnt go. Suprisingly I only got passed by maybe 3 people which was weird with how much I died. Ill rest up and then get back at it but probably going to focus on doing some trail races for a while.

Had a great weekend relaxing on Mikes houseboat and visiting/swimming/watching tv/riding jetskis. Also ran a race in between all the fun. I had no expectations only being 2 weeks out from St. George and with last weeks runs feeling pretty hard.  Its a fun course through some home areas of Page for a few miles then out onto a dirt trail that runs along the rim over looking the lake for 2 miles. Then it drops down along the highway and crosses the bridge and runs along the frontage road to Wahweep marina. I started off with a pace that I felt I could hold and went from there. I was in about 10th place coming into the trail and feeling pretty good and I love me some trail running so I passed a couple of guys here and then stayed in 8th for the remainder of the race. I got pretty tired coming out of the dirt and thought that it was going to be a bad last half but after crossing the bridge my body came alive and I was able to really work up the hills along the frontage road. I worked hard at chasing down 6-7 but they held their pace stong and all I could do was close the gap a bit. Ended up breaking the masters course record by over 12 minutes (technically Walter has run faster twice but he won the race those two times so he doesnt count). Happy to have such a good race so close after a marathon. Had a blast before, during and after the race. Really glad I went.

Big thanks to Walter for getting me in at the last moment. Thanks tons!!!!

Spanish Wash/City Wells. Wanted to hit the trails with the rains having packed them down. Apparently everyone else in southern utah/colorado/nevada/arizona/california had the same idea. Pretty bummed that all these people know about these trails now. Not very enjoyable having to fight bikers/horse riders/walkers with damn dogs the whole run. End rant.

Got to the Spanish wash turn off and ran up the wash a ways and decided to head up to the top of a peak to see the view. It was really pretty. Decided that I needed to head up the tallest peak out there because Ive always wanted to and it was the perfect day for it. Lots of climbing (630' in .5 miles at one point) but the view was worth the effort. Came back down on the east side and hit the City Wells trail back to the car.

Really enjoyed the way out but the legs didnt feel to hot so I knew the way back wasnt going to be as fun. I was right. The way back was hard but i just slowed down and tried to enjoy being able to get out and do what I so love.

Had it in the back of my head that I could shave some off last years time. No such luck today. Hit the first 3 pretty well but once I got to the first climb I struggled getting up it and couldnt ever get moving again. Still had fun and won the race. Did a few miles warm up before the race and that was a good little jog. 5:43, 5:34, 5:43, 6:10, 5:57, 5:47, 5:19 (1:16)
