Was supposed to do 800s but my usual route was mud so I ran to a couple other places that I thought would work but they wouldnt. Tried to go down to Hells Hole but it was so muddy I had to walk to get to the paved portion of the trail and then the trail was washed out by the rains. Ended up running up to Highland park and trying to run hard the whole way up the hill. Abs hurt horribly the whole run. Should have called it quits after a couple miles as now I can barely walk.

Stretched, hit the bike for 15 minutes then tried to run a few miles. 10 steps in and the pain was back. Oh well. Did 2 slow miles and it only got worse. 10 minutes cool down on the bike. I did get in 10 good solid minutes of pogo stick while cleaning out the garage afterwards. I'll have to get Dustin to convert that to mileage for me.

Going to try and not run for a few weeks and see if that helps. Stretching and doing exercises twice a day that are supposed to help the affected area. Also going to lift and see if I cant transform from a super skinny twig into just a regular skinny twig.

30min bike then lifting.

Good job keeping active. Injury can sure put a damper on your desire. I do know that when you come back you will be energized. I am loving running again after the last year of stupid little injuries. The neuromas are getting under control with orthotics and now I am more excited to run because the feet don't hurt. I can now c=go out and really enjoy running- thats what it is all about isn't it? Keep smiling!

Decided to try a little run after taking a week off. Havent had any pains for several days so my hopes where high. Half a block down and it started again. Not as bad as before but there none the less. Got a mile out and turned around and it seemed to go away for a few blocks then everything felt like it was getting tight and the pain came back. Bummer.

Went to a "natual healing" doc last week and he didnt tell me what he thought was wrong but said he could help. Not sure on that so I havent been back. Got a buddy who is a PA and he had me try a medrol dose pack to see if that would decrease any internal swelling there might be. Dont feel any better a week later. Went to a sports doc yesterday and he ruled out a sports hernia, took an xray which was normal then suggested a medrol dose and time off. Glad its not a hernia but not sure what to do now. Its been 2 weeks since my last real run and it doesnt seem any better. Sucky

Not my best time for a half (actually my slowest road half in years) but considering im still trying to work out the groin/ab issue I wont get to down about it.

The garmin was dead so I didnt get any splits and I decided to leave the music home which I think helped me focus a bit on my running. Felt good at the start but could tell after about a mile that I was going to have to fight to keep whatever pace we where currently going at. I fell in behind a guy that lives up the street and just tried to not let him get to far ahead and man was that a lot of effort. Im glad I didnt have the watch cause if I would have seen the pace I think I might have gotten frustrated. It felt like we where pushing a good pace and I thought we might come across around 1:20 so when I heard the time at the finish I was taken back just a little. That was a hard fought 6:2X pace if Ive ever run one.

More sore than Ive been in quite awhile today but I dont think I aggrivated anything so thats a good thing.

Rob - Im not sure what I was expecting either. I guess there was that small hope in the back of my mind that I wouldnt have lost anything and could bust out a super fast time or at least run without it taking a lot of effort. But your right, its one to build on. Thanks

Ran legs 5,10 and overall feel pretty good about it. Leg 5 was 6:00 avg  for just over 4 miles and I felt like I saved something for the second leg. Leg 10 felt pretty good for the first mile then I could tell I was beat. I was trying to catch the team just in front as they where in our co-ed division but he just had to much juice and left me big time. Hit the first 3 at about 6:10 but then slowed to a dead crawl for the last 3 and ended with a 6:38 avg for the 6.7 miles.

Ran into Matt from LV that I ran with down at Surf City last year and that was kind of fun to talk for a few minutes. He was on the winning co-ed team.

Had a really fun time today at the race. The course was diffucult but enjoyable at the same time. Thankfully the wind wasnt an issue and the rain held off until the last couple miles.

Started off easy with Nate Bundy and we ran together for a few miles and chatted about running. Everything felt good so I picked up the pace just a little. My garmin apparently didnt pick up any signal so when we started I wasnt getting any pace info. That took about a half mile to figure out so I dont have any accurate splits.

Had fun running along enjoying the views and weather and chatted with Ty for a bit as I caught up to her coming around the lake. Once we started into the houses by the lake I started to feel the lack of proper marathon training. My easy to hold pace was becoming a bit of a labor to maintain. From here on out I just tried to keep positive and remind myself that I wasnt here to race but to get in a good training run and see how the injury would play out.

I did fairly well until the hill coming out of Sand Hollow. I slowed to almost a walk up that sucker and my abs got really tight for the remainder of the run which caused my hips to tighten up which made everything uncomfortable. I took plenty of water at each station and grabed a cliff shot every 7 miles and I think that helped me make it through.

The last 4 miles into town where pretty brutal as my legs where completely gone and I was struggling to hold a 7 min pace. I even turned off my music and passed it off to my dad as he came by in the car so I could concentrate on breathing and listen to my body better. Some where in here I got a nice surge of energy and picked up the pace for about a mile but then that burned out and I was left to talk my legs into working for the last bit.

I checked to watch and calculating in the missed 1/2 mile I figured I could still beat 3 hours (which I didnt think I could do), so I tryed really hard to work the last mile. Im sure it wasnt very quick but I was trying hard.

So it turned out to be a fun run, the abs held up ok and I dont think my fitness has completly left so that gives me hope for Utah Valley.

Race: Scandinavian Heritage Festival 1/2 (12.83 Miles) 01:23:11, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1
Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
16.500.000.00

Went up to Ephraim to run a 1/2 marathon with Emily my parents and the kids and celebrate our Scandinavian heritage. This was her first 1/2 marathon and first run over 10 miles. She did great and Im super proud of her. We had a fun time at the festival and ate some good food.

We had perfect weather and a flat course so it was a great day for a run. I wanted to use this race to judge how far my fitness has fallen before running Utah Valley in a few weeks and as a result of how I felt I will be changing my "goals" for up there. I ran a little warm up and then we got right to it. There where prob only 20 people in the 1/2 and none looked to be much of a threat (looks are decieving) so I wasnt worried to much about having anyone to run with. My plan was to just start easy and then if I felt ok try and speed up and see what kind of pace I could hold (I figured I could hold a 6:20-6:30 without killing myself).

Right off the bat about 4 guys took off at sub 6 pace. I didnt fret as I thought they would slow pretty quickly. They didnt and I found myself sucked into a much faster pace for the first 2 miles than I had planned on. The lead guy (didnt look like much of a runner and looked to be working way too hard to hold any kind of pace for long) just kept pulling further out but I finally got myself calmed down and into a pace I felt I could hold and maybe even speed up the final couple miles. Passed all but the leader by mile 2 and was feeling good. By mile 5 I was not feeling as good but I could tell that the leader was coming back so I keep trying to speed up. Caught him at 6 but stopped to grab a water (no one handing it out) and drop my gloves off to my dad so he pulled away again. When I caught back up to him he wasnt going to let go of the lead without a fight. He kept speeding up but I just kept holding the pace knowing he was going to fall back which he did after a mile of fighting. For the rest of the race it was a battle to just not slow down to much and get passed. I would be going along at what felt like the same pace but each time I looked at the watch I was down to almost 7 min pace. I would push to speed back up and just repeated this cycle for the last 5 miles. Towards the end anytime we turned a corner I could see the 2nd place guy and he was closer each time. Thankfully I held him off and walked away with a little cash for the effort.

The family picked me up at the finish and took my back to find Emily who was at mile 8. The boys and Ada ran with her for a bit then I ran with her to the finish which was fun to be able to do.

The splits are pretty even (not counting miles 7,11,12) so I must have checked my watch just as I was starting to slow and then sped up before I held the slower pace for very long. Overall a good run but I shouldnt have to push as hard as I did (and those last 6 miles where VERY hard) to hold a 6:30 pace. When you dont train you cant expect to run great.

Any thoughts about going into a race when you know you haven't trained optimally? Heroic or stupid? It's a question I'm pondering right now.

On another note. Your posts are great. Filled with wisdom and wit. Keep it up.

From JamesH on Sat, Jun 11, 2011 at 19:40:54 from 174.52.139.219

Thanks Travis.

Depends on the race and what optimally is. I dont think Ive hit a race in "optimal" shape yet. But I enjoy it so much I keep coming back for more punishment.

5k,10k no big deal. 1/2 or marathon. Go for it if your just wanting to run for fun. If you are trying to race its a stupid idea. I learned that the hard way today (again). Nothing like having 25-30 people pass you in the last 3 miles to make you happy.

Quail Creek. I was going to go out early this morn but after trying to fall asleep for a few hours I got out of bed around 12:30am and decided to just do the run. Emily helped me get all lighted up and then she went out to drop some waters for me. I started out and the body was tired but I figured this would be a "get the distance in" run and not worry about pace at all. Loosened up just before the climb up Highland and on the way up could tell that between the wind and tired body it was going to be pretty slow going. Made it to the top and couldnt get going any faster down the other side. The 9:30 pace I was pushing was a 6:30 effort easy. Emily pulled me over on her way back from droping water and said I didnt look to good. I didnt feel good thats for sure so I decided to bag the whole idea. Got home, showered and still couldnt fall asleep until about 4:00am. What the *&%. Might try again on Sunday morning.

I wouldnt have though I could fall out of shape so far in so little time. Kind of sucks that it takes years to get into good shape but only a few months to loose it all.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of surgery did you have? Was it a sports hernia or something similar. Good luck with the recovery and have a Merry Christmas.

Not a good sign but I pressed on. The climb up the ridge added to the fun and the rest of the run didnt feel so hot for that area which was to bad because my legs and breathing were ready to go another several miles. Hopefully its just from not having run up any hills since the surgery and not more issues developing cause this is how it felt when this all started last year.
