Ran out on the new Washington trail over to the dam road. Ran up one branch of the trail but came back after a quarter mile or so. It was super steep and the wind was just howling down the canyon so I just ran out towards the dam. Nice trail. Hopefully they will tie it into the "trail to nowhere" someday.

Ran the Painters course with Dave, Austin and Nate. Clyde and Logan rode along on bikes. Wasnt feeling very good for the first half. Had some wierd stomach thing going on. That went away finally but my left arm went numb for some reason, probably the cold. Maybe if I used a blow dryer on it that might help right Clyde? Right shin is pretty tender so we'll see what happens this next week.

There where a couple of clowns talking as the race got going about how all the people in front of them would never be able to keep their pace the whole race. Never saw those bozos again after mile 1. Steve got me settled into a good grove and I just wanted to keep it up the whole race. That didnt happen but I still PR'd by a minute plus. Got a horrid cramp around mile 8 and thought about blowing chunks a couple times but was able to survive. Legs where spent by the end. From Barry on Sat, Jan 31, 2009 at 21:11:13

I was just reading about your shins and i know how you feel because i was in your shoes. So here is some exercise to help your shin problem go away. I has worked for me and i know it will help you. This was given to me by another blogger.

Barry, is your shin pain from shin splints? Jill, our running coach Donnie's wife, ran track at Baylor University. I had shin splints a few weeks before Boston last year and she taught me how to overcome them and how to never get them again. Here is the simple workout that you do.

1. Before you run do these exercises:

- duck walk with your toes pointing outward away from each other for 20 meters.

- duck walk with your toes pointing inward toward each other for 20 meters.

- heel walk with your toes pointing up for 20 meters.

- walk backwards on your toes for 20 meters.

- then do your other regular stretches or other drills and then do your run.

2. After your run do this simple exercise. Find a step or curb that has a hand rail or something you can hold on to and steady yourself. Stand on the step on one foot with your forefoot (have your heel extended off the step in the air).

Raise yourself and lower yourself as many times as you can until your calf muscle burns. I usually get about 100 raises in a set.

Change legs and with the other foot raise and lower yourself as many times as you can until that calf muscle burns.

Repeat this with each leg so you can get 3 sets with each leg.

You are done. If you do these pre-run drills and post-run exercise you will never get shin splints again and the shin splints you have will heal very quickly.

Cumulus Blue Miles: 5.01
Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
9.020.000.00

I took the last couple days off becuase my calves where so sore it hurt to even touch them let alone run. Im starting to get gun shy with every little twinge or odd feeling in my legs. So I thought this morn id do a nice easy 6 miles. Started up Millcreek and had some old fools dog chase me for a bit then I got to the sand hill turn off and I though "James, lets see what the fuss is about regarding this here sand hill." What kind of stupid fool trys to run 1 mile straight up a hill composed entirely of sand? Especially when trying to recover from an injury. Oh well. Actually, aside from dodging the fresh horse tracks digging up the trail it was fun. Coming down the other side isnt quite so steep but makes for some fun bounding in the sand. After getting out of the sand and back on the road I figured my fun for the day was over. Not so. I cut over towards the turf farm from the Maverick to cut off some distance. Im crusing along the dirt and notice what looks like a trench cut in the road to keep cars from coming up it. No big deal. A couple of feet across I can easily jump. What the crap? This thing is like 6 to 7 feet across and filled with water. Its too late to stop so I quickly call to mind a gracefull gazell bounding across the sahara for motivation, stutter step to get on the right  foot for take off and leap for all Im worth. I start windmilling my arms and churning the legs like a mad man to get all the momentum I can. Not at all the gracefull gazell I was going for. Luckily I have just enough stretch that my toes catch right on the edge and Im able to get my legs under me just before I go down hard. Im pretty sure someone somewhere was watching and just having a great laugh at my expense. I made it home in one piece and the legs feel really good. Ended up going a few mile more than I planned but it was worth it.

Wasnt sure what to expect today but I found out pretty quick that it ends up being your turn to run alot faster than you think it will. On the 3-4 exchange I was still out doing a warm up run when Nate says "I think thats the lead guy and theres Dustin right behind him." Crap on a crap stick cause I'm still 2/10 of a mile from the exchange with my sweats on and a long shirt and no number. Im pulling cloths and electronics off while trying to sprint to the exchange point. Dustin pulled off his singlet and I threw that on and then took off. I tried really hard to make up that time I lost but Im not sure I gained much of it back. So thanks to everyone else on the team running some good legs we managed to win this little jog today. "Coach" Decker put together a team that gave us a real run for the money but we where able to pull ahead during leg 6 and never looked back.

Good race today. I was able to shave another 25 seconds off my 10k time and 3 minutes off last years time. This course is a bit flatter than the Summer Games course so I can tell Im in better shape so far. I felt good but could tell right from the get go that I wasnt going to be able to keep close enough to the leaders to win. I was able to stay within a few yards of Nate until the last 3/4 mile but I knew I wouldnt be able to catch him. Once Ryan passed me I just wanted to keep from slidding back any further which I was able to do. No shin issues today so I think its time to start picking the training back up.

Meet up with Bill and it was a bit chilly so we started running. I looked back and saw headlights so we went back to see if it was someone we knew. It was Tyler from up north. We took back off and ran into Dave about a mile out and right behind was Steve. They needed to fuel up so they didnt join up. I figured they would catch up later on but we never saw them again. I felt alright but going up the big climb I was spent and had to walk for a bit. Bill and Tyler where nice enough to wait at the top and we continued on. Coming back down was good but the Bull got a bit crazy and we where pushing 6min pace for a while. Bill and Tyler kept going pretty good the last couple but I slowed down to 7:30 to keep from dying. Fun run and it was nice to get to know Tyler a little bit.

I probably went faster than I should have but its hard to slow down when you feel good. You can always find a reason to not run if you try hard enough. That is why being lazy is not necessarily a bad thing for runers. I, for one, am too lazy to come up with a reason to not run so therefore, I run.... Okay, that was more than I expected, but kind of profound, huh? Anyway, Monday it is... I was supposed to run for an hour but after 40 minutes every one was packing up and leaving and I had a family thing to get ready for so I called it good. From Dustin on Fri, May 08, 2009 at 13:20:17 from 204.113.48.69

Yeah, I've never ran the full marathon at Ogden. Sasha has it being quite a bit slower than St. George on the predictor. I don't want to go out too fast and then struggle to finish, which I've done lately with some of the halves I've run. Looking at the course profile, I would think it would be a course you could negative split.

Im not good at mile by mile reports like others so Ill just throw random thought out on todays race. In my mind I really thought I could pull off a 2:42 but I am very pleased with todays results. 2:48, seventh place overall and first in my division. Plus I was able to shave another 8 minutes off my PR. Which was set on a much faster course. I can honestly say I left nothing on the course in this run. I was able to stay positive even when I ran completly out of gas and was running on sheer will and the legs just couldnt go any faster. It was fun to get the next runner in my sights and then pick them off and work on the next one. A few tried to stay with me as I passed but I was able to hold pace and they eventually fell off. I felt incredible for the first half and was starting to wonder if maybe I had gone out to slow but once we came across the dam my legs got heavy and I wasnt able to pick up the pace down the canyon like I though I could. From here on out it was all about mind games. I just kept telling myself "this is what all the hard work is for. Keep pushing and you can fall down once you cross the finish line." My legs really gave out the last three miles. Aside from those last three miles I am pumped about this race and how my training is progressing. Im ready for the next one and another wall to break through.

I had been feeling like my training wasnt up to par since running Odgen so I wasnt making any big plans today, just run and see how it goes.

I was afraid that I might have gone out a bit to quick and would die at the end so once the canyon started I figured just go and deal with the consiquences at miles 8-13. Suprisingly I didnt die too bad out of the canyon and even though I was pushing I still had the juice to pick it up the last mile and keep from being passed. I needed this to help remotivate me for St. George and for running in general. Excited for everyones good race today. Even you Dave, your times are nothing to be scoffed at, ever!

So what's new James? Like I always say, come race day the real James shows up. Your the running version of Jason from Friday the 13th. Man, your splits are awesome. Very impressed that you stuck that last mile back in the 5's, WOW!!!

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Jul 18, 2009 at 21:35:22 from 192.168.1.1

Congratulations on the improvement. You ran the right pace. When you get in shape, halves start to hurt like 5 Ks. Because you are now running them almost as fast as you would a 5 K. Do not be afraid to find yourself breathing hard 3 miles into a half. Even if you go out fast and die sometimes, with better training and more sleep you'll hold the pace next time around.

From JamesH on Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 15:21:17 from 209.33.199.125

The trail was the best I have ever seen it. All the weeds are dead and its really clear and well defined. People must be using it more. Why they would do that in this heat is anyones guess. Just so you know you can get water from the top wells swamp cooler. You just have to remove one of the sides if its not coming out the overflow.

Picked up Scott in Veyo and had a nice chat up to the start of the race. Did a 3/4 mile warm up to get the body moving before the start. I was figuring Ryan would take right off and I wouldnt see him for the rest of the race but we ended up running together until the turn around at 7.5. I kept telling Ryan it was going to be a tough one going back because we just kept going down hill after hill. At the turn around I had trouble getting my gu out of that little pocket inside the shorts so I walked while I got the squared away and then grabed a water and washed it down. Pretty much just followed Ryan back up all the hills. I took the lead for a while but I was so tired that I had to stop and walk for a few steps to get myself together and Ryan passed and stayed ahead for the rest of the run. At one point I was thinking how slow it felt like I was going and couldnt figure out why Ryan didnt just blow on by and take a big lead and then he says "I cant believe how slow we are going." If I would have had the energy I would have laughed for quite a while. My gamin ran out of space and I got messing with it and stopped the time so I lost a 1/2 mile during mile 11 so no acurate splits from there on out. Thats ok they arent really worth putting down. This was one tough little race but Im glad I did it and also that I didnt miss a day running this week. In the past Ive always taken training easy before races but Im trying to focus on the larger goal of a good time at STG so I didnt cut back. (ok fridays run was short but Im getting better)

Wasnt sure what to do but as I ran past the elementary they had a relativly flat track around their ball fields so I measured out what I thought was 1000 meters with the garmin and got to work. Ive never done these before so I wasnt sure how fast to go. I looked at Dustins 1000 workout from a few weeks back before I left home and figured Id try to go around 3:30 and see how that felt.

3 - 3:34

4 - 3:33

5 - 3:29

The jog home was tough because my legs where really, really tired. Might have been a bit to fast or maybe I ran too many. Who knows. I do know that all my times where off because when I got home I looked up how far 1000 is in miles and I was going .1 too far each time except on number 2 where I went .3 too far. Nice run. I was going to run with you guys but decided to do my long run yesterday morning. I was trying to see how well my body will act after the SGM. I have an 8k race the monday following the marathon. Then 3 days later a half marathon.......not looking forward to that one.

Good luck in the morning! I am running the 5k, decided to get the sprint series for my age group.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
20.000.000.00

I hadnt decided weather to run the 1/2 or the 20 miler but decided before getting on the bus that I'd do the 20 so I could stay in the running for the race series. The calves where sore and a bit stiff from yesterdays 23 miles but didnt end up being a problem. There wasnt someone to start the race so Jeff was picked to yell us off at 6:36am. I dont think that the actual race clock was started when we started because everyones watch times where off from the finish clock time. Im going to go with the finish clock time because it was a faster time by a minute+. Started out easy and with no intention of trying to do anything but finish with a halfway decent time. The first mile felt about right but I guess Im more competitive than I thought because I picked it up and caught up with Ryan and Steve(?) just after the big downhill out of Veyo. We all pretty much stayed close together until outside of Gunlock and from somewhere I got a massive surge of feeling good so I picked it up and passed Ryan and Steve(?). After a few miles of leading I got wondering when one of them was going to come shooting by but it never happened. I felt really good coming past Gunlock Res and towards the old highway and was enjoying being in the lead. I started to get tired just before the old highway and really felt like I was slowing. I checked my garmin a few times but kept telling myself to just not worry about it and try to run hard. The last 2 miles where really hard but I didnt slow down as much as it felt like I did. On a couple of the downhills I even dipped into the high 4's for a little bit. I never thought that would happen especially in a distance race. Im really happy with how today turned out especially after such a long run yesterday. I thought I might continue the Holt tradition of finishing 2nd but was able to win today and edge out Ryan for 1st place overall in the runners series which was an added bonus. Now for some good rest and hopefully I havent overdone it and messed up my marathon goals. 1 - 6:40 2 - 5:45 3 - 5:56 4 - 6:21 5 - 6:35 6 - 6:20 7 - 6:56 (stopped at aid station to tighten my shoe) 8 - 6:15 9 - 6:27 10 - 5:52 11 - 6:15 12 - 6:07 13 - 6:23 14 - 6:16 15 - 6:16 16 - 6:10 17 - 6:41 18 - 6:12 19 - 6:23 20 - 6:23

Not to bad a race today. Wasnt planning on anything super fast I just wanted to beat my previous times on this course. I wasnt going to have to try to hard as I think my fastest on this course was 40 something a few years back. Didnt see any super fast runners at first and thought I might get a win in a slow field but then I saw Nick and a couple other guys and knew that wasnt going to happen. Fell into 6th place by 1/2 a mile and stayed there until mile 3. Caught up with Nicks little bro (Camron i think) and ran behind him for the rest of the race. I knew we where slowing in miles 4-5 and if I could get around him i might be able to move up on number 3 but I just couldnt get any speed going. I was starting to get frustrated with it but finally got my mind/body to relax and enjoy where I was at. Tried to speed up the last mile and pull away but he stuck right with me and was able to sprint off the last .2. Had a good time and Im glad I ran.

Fields. I was feeling really good and after a couple of miles I told myself that I'd throw in some tempo miles mid run just for fun. Saw Dave and the high school kids burning down the road and then decided to kick it into gear. I got about a quarter mile in and wham its bathroom time. I guess im pretty lucky cause Ive made it through my whole running life and never had that happen before. I slowed back down to normal pace and hoped it would go away. Not so much. I knew there was a park with a rest room coming up so I just held on as best I could. That was the longest 2 miles of my life. I was running all wierd trying to keep from having an accident and just barely made it to the jon. Thankfully that pitstop took care of the issue and the run back was uneventful. Ended up being faster than most of my 10-14 mile runs pace wise so all in all a good run.

Steve and Logan took off with a couple others in hot pursuit. I hung back a bit to get warmed up and then picked up the pace after about .5.  Got around everyone but Logan and just tried to not let him get to far away. Lots of uphill and quick turns made it hard to get any steady pace but it was a great run and the area is beautiful. I knew it would be chilly so I got all bundled up and headed down to river trail to head into Bloomington. By the time I got to River Rd my hands hurt so bad from the cold I was almost in tears. I guess the cheap Walmart gloves dont help when its really cold. I decided to get off the trail and away from the river and see if that helped warm things up a little. Nope. Still cold. Decided to just bag it and get home as quick as possible. In my frozen state I decided that going up over Formaster Ridge would be the best way home but turns out it wasnt. So to sum up, 5 am cold, Walmart gloves - not super helpful, Formaster Ridge - bad idea.

Bill was nice enough to give me the 2 shortest legs today which was nice cause my legs where tired coming into this. First leg was on Skyline Dr. above town towards Middleton. Had a pretty good climb the first .5 that really slowed me down but I was able to pick the pace up for the rest of the leg and dispite the fact that I could tell that I was working it felt good. Second leg was from Sunriver into Bloomington Park. I wanted to just gun it the whole way as it was only 2 miles but the legs didnt want anything to do with that. I was able to run a pretty good clip the whole time but 2 miles was all I had in me.

It was fun to hang out with everyone and survive the car ride (im looking at you Dave and Bill) in one piece. I can tell that I really need to do speed work if im going to bring my race times down like I want to.

Landfill. Found a dirt road that runs along the boundry of the landfill so I followed that for a couple miles. Ran across the foundation of an old building, lots of lumber and a huge beam. Wonder what it could have been. Slight head wind on the way back so it got pretty cold.

Treadmill. Actually had a good run on the machine today. The last several treadmill runs have been way to hard but todays wasnt to bad. The whole fam went up north and left me alone for the weekend. Woo whooo!!!!! Bachelor life once again. The sad thing is that usually consists of a lot of sleeping and thinking about working on my car but not actually doing it.

Ended up with almost 1000 more miles than last year but not the huge improvements in race times I was hoping for. Ogdens 8 minute pr came with less training than St Georges 1 minute pr. Im thinking its more about quality of miles and not so much distance. The trick is finding that balance I guess. Im going to try and work more on speed this coming year and see what happens. Its been a fun year of runs and lots of races and even a couple of wins. Yay me. Highlight of the year was having Dave run me in at St George. It would have been nice to have had something left to see how much he could have pushed me but it was still fun. Hes a great runner so any time I can be with him in a race I'll take it. I just hope I can keep that passion and love of running going and enjoy it for years more.
