Club run with Kendrik and Brandon(?). Down to river trail for a few miles and then back. Brandon(?) wasnt up for much of a run so Kendrik and I just took it easy and we all talked. Not as many miles as I'd have liked but I was ready to eat when I got home so I just called it good. |

| Ran out on the new Washington trail over to the dam road. Ran up one branch of the trail but came back after a quarter mile or so. It was super steep and the wind was just howling down the canyon so I just ran out towards the dam. Nice trail. Hopefully they will tie it into the "trail to nowhere" someday. |

| Ran the Painters course with Dave, Austin and Nate. Clyde and Logan rode along on bikes. Wasnt feeling very good for the first half. Had some wierd stomach thing going on. That went away finally but my left arm went numb for some reason, probably the cold. Maybe if I used a blow dryer on it that might help right Clyde? Right shin is pretty tender so we'll see what happens this next week. |

| Did a couple mile warmup with Austin, Dustin, Dave and Hayden. I usually dont get out to quick but I was wanting 1:20 so I figured id better not take any chances. There where a couple of clowns talking as the race got going about how all the people in front of them would never be able to keep their pace the whole race. Never saw those bozos again after mile 1. Steve got me settled into a good grove and I just wanted to keep it up the whole race. That didnt happen but I still PR'd by a minute plus. Got a horrid cramp around mile 8 and thought about blowing chunks a couple times but was able to survive. Legs where spent by the end. Not quite the time I was gunning for but I feel good about how things are progressing. |

| Day two of no running. Its funny how much free time it feels like I have in the evening when I dont go run after work. Hopefully this little break will be enough to get the shins better because Im jonesing to get going again already. I keep dreaming about running and I never do that that I can remember. I'll try and ease back into it next week and not jump right up to 60 mile weeks. | |

I took the last couple days off becuase my calves where so sore it hurt to even touch them let alone run. Im starting to get gun shy with every little twinge or odd feeling in my legs. So I thought this morn id do a nice easy 6 miles. Started up Millcreek and had some old fools dog chase me for a bit then I got to the sand hill turn off and I though "James, lets see what the fuss is about regarding this here sand hill." What kind of stupid fool trys to run 1 mile straight up a hill composed entirely of sand? Especially when trying to recover from an injury. Oh well. Actually, aside from dodging the fresh horse tracks digging up the trail it was fun. Coming down the other side isnt quite so steep but makes for some fun bounding in the sand. After getting out of the sand and back on the road I figured my fun for the day was over. Not so. I cut over towards the turf farm from the Maverick to cut off some distance. Im crusing along the dirt and notice what looks like a trench cut in the road to keep cars from coming up it. No big deal. A couple of feet across I can easily jump. What the crap? This thing is like 6 to 7 feet across and filled with water. Its too late to stop so I quickly call to mind a gracefull gazell bounding across the sahara for motivation, stutter step to get on the right foot for take off and leap for all Im worth. I start windmilling my arms and churning the legs like a mad man to get all the momentum I can. Not at all the gracefull gazell I was going for. Luckily I have just enough stretch that my toes catch right on the edge and Im able to get my legs under me just before I go down hard. Im pretty sure someone somewhere was watching and just having a great laugh at my expense. I made it home in one piece and the legs feel really good. Ended up going a few mile more than I planned but it was worth it. |

Met Dave, Nate and Steve at Daves house and hit the dusty trail nice and early. It was a beautiful morning, not to cold but a nice bite to the air. The road was still pretty packed from the rains so sand wasnt to much of an issue. Had a good little disscusion on the state of the union for a few miles and even managed to not get eaten by any cougars with their devious trapings. I havent gone over 18 since the marathon but the body held up pretty well. Good run with good people. Fun stuff. |

| Wasnt sure what to expect today but I found out pretty quick that it ends up being your turn to run alot faster than you think it will. On the 3-4 exchange I was still out doing a warm up run when Nate says "I think thats the lead guy and theres Dustin right behind him." Crap on a crap stick cause I'm still 2/10 of a mile from the exchange with my sweats on and a long shirt and no number. Im pulling cloths and electronics off while trying to sprint to the exchange point. Dustin pulled off his singlet and I threw that on and then took off. I tried really hard to make up that time I lost but Im not sure I gained much of it back. So thanks to everyone else on the team running some good legs we managed to win this little jog today. "Coach" Decker put together a team that gave us a real run for the money but we where able to pull ahead during leg 6 and never looked back. |

| Good race today. I was able to shave another 25 seconds off my 10k time and 3 minutes off last years time. This course is a bit flatter than the Summer Games course so I can tell Im in better shape so far. I felt good but could tell right from the get go that I wasnt going to be able to keep close enough to the leaders to win. I was able to stay within a few yards of Nate until the last 3/4 mile but I knew I wouldnt be able to catch him. Once Ryan passed me I just wanted to keep from slidding back any further which I was able to do. No shin issues today so I think its time to start picking the training back up. |

We took back off and ran into Dave about a mile out and right behind was Steve. They needed to fuel up so they didnt join up. I figured they would catch up later on but we never saw them again. I felt alright but going up the big climb I was spent and had to walk for a bit. Bill and Tyler where nice enough to wait at the top and we continued on. Coming back down was good but the Bull got a bit crazy and we where pushing 6min pace for a while. Bill and Tyler kept going pretty good the last couple but I slowed down to 7:30 to keep from dying. Ran out to Bloomington and back on the river trail. Had a really strong head wind the whole 10 out. Threw in 4 low 6's to see how the legs would hold up when tired. They where tired but all in all it was a good run. When I got home I chugged a recovery drink and shot over to Hansen stadium to run at the cancer relay. I was supposed to run for an hour but after 40 minutes every one was packing up and leaving and I had a family thing to get ready for so I called it good. I was able to hit those 5 on the track at a good pace even after the long run but now I am spent. But in a good way. |

| Parkway/Highland x2. Not a big fan of running loops but there are a couple parks with water on this route and that helps now that its warming up. Didnt take the garmin as I find myself worrying to much about pace and right now with the body being tired I dont want to push and get an injury. Even with being super tired I was able to make it up the dirt monster hill twice without walking. |

I wanted to just call it good after a couple miles but I kept at it. Im hoping I can get past this worn out phase soon. | Ran with Dave along the river trail then out to Quail Creek and back on the old highway. We saw two owls in the cliffs along the river and stopped and checked them out for a couple minutes. Havent seen many owls the last few years so that was neat. Dave helped me keep a nice even pace and we had a good run. The weather was great until we ran into a head wind on the way back and that really sucked the juice out of me. Not running Thursday cut the mileage back this week but Im really worn out so I'll call it good. |

Ogden Marathon (26.2 Miles) 02:48:48, Place overall: 7, Place in age division: 1 | Running Miles | Swimming Yards | Bike Miles | 26.20 | 0.00 | 0.00 |
| Im not good at mile by mile reports like others so Ill just throw random thought out on todays race. In my mind I really thought I could pull off a 2:42 but I am very pleased with todays results. 2:48, seventh place overall and first in my division. Plus I was able to shave another 8 minutes off my PR. Which was set on a much faster course. I can honestly say I left nothing on the course in this run. I was able to stay positive even when I ran completly out of gas and was running on sheer will and the legs just couldnt go any faster. It was fun to get the next runner in my sights and then pick them off and work on the next one. A few tried to stay with me as I passed but I was able to hold pace and they eventually fell off. I felt incredible for the first half and was starting to wonder if maybe I had gone out to slow but once we came across the dam my legs got heavy and I wasnt able to pick up the pace down the canyon like I though I could. From here on out it was all about mind games. I just kept telling myself "this is what all the hard work is for. Keep pushing and you can fall down once you cross the finish line." My legs really gave out the last three miles. Aside from those last three miles I am pumped about this race and how my training is progressing. Im ready for the next one and another wall to break through.

Started up again but before I got back to tempo mode again it was dinner time so I stopped. Food before everything I say. Headed outside after dinner settled and did the Parkway 6 at 7 min pace. I was afraid that I might have gone out a bit to quick and would die at the end so once the canyon started I figured just go and deal with the consiquences at miles 8-13. Suprisingly I didnt die too bad out of the canyon and even though I was pushing I still had the juice to pick it up the last mile and keep from being passed. Down the marathon course with Dave, Steve and Logan. I wasnt sure if I would be able to hit my tempo miles because of battling a head cold but it turned out pretty well. We took it easy down to the volcano and then Dave and Steve took off. Logan was kind enough to hang back with me for a bit and then we took off. Hit 7 (6:14, 6:06, 6:09, 6:03, 6:01, 6:01, 6:09) and then cooled down the last mile. Tried to work on keeping the legs turning over good as they where getting tired the last few miles. |

| Middleton then up into the industrial park. Beautiful weather and not much traffic. As an added bonus the gangsters I suprised at the park on my water stop didnt bust a cap in @#$ my for "sneaking up on them." Apparently its time to start packing some heat when I run. Or maybe I should loudly anouncing my presence every 5-10 seconds. |

Thankfully there was water running in the fields so I could cool off a little every couple miles. Legs where ok but I think the heat really burnt me out. |

| Picked up Scott in Veyo and had a nice chat up to the start of the race. Did a 3/4 mile warm up to get the body moving before the start. I was figuring Ryan would take right off and I wouldnt see him for the rest of the race but we ended up running together until the turn around at 7.5. I kept telling Ryan it was going to be a tough one going back because we just kept going down hill after hill. At the turn around I had trouble getting my gu out of that little pocket inside the shorts so I walked while I got the squared away and then grabed a water and washed it down. Pretty much just followed Ryan back up all the hills. I took the lead for a while but I was so tired that I had to stop and walk for a few steps to get myself together and Ryan passed and stayed ahead for the rest of the run. At one point I was thinking how slow it felt like I was going and couldnt figure out why Ryan didnt just blow on by and take a big lead and then he says "I cant believe how slow we are going." If I would have had the energy I would have laughed for quite a while. My gamin ran out of space and I got messing with it and stopped the time so I lost a 1/2 mile during mile 11 so no acurate splits from there on out. Thats ok they arent really worth putting down. This was one tough little race but Im glad I did it and also that I didnt miss a day running this week. In the past Ive always taken training easy before races but Im trying to focus on the larger goal of a good time at STG so I didnt cut back. (ok fridays run was short but Im getting better) |

I got out 5 miles and checked the time and only had 30 minutes to get home and get showered before having to be at the hospital. Wasnt planning on going fast today but I had to speed it up and then cut off the mileage to get back in time. If all goes well I'll finish up tonight. PM - 6 River Trail. Slow and tired. |

Ran to the high school to do some 1000 repeats on the track but there was something going on there. Wasnt sure what to do but as I ran past the elementary they had a relativly flat track around their ball fields so I measured out what I thought was 1000 meters with the garmin and got to work. Ive never done these before so I wasnt sure how fast to go. I looked at Dustins 1000 workout from a few weeks back before I left home and figured Id try to go around 3:30 and see how that felt.
1 - 3:35
2 - 3:46 (went long cause I wasnt paying attention)
3 - 3:34
4 - 3:33
5 - 3:29
The jog home was tough because my legs where really, really tired. Might have been a bit to fast or maybe I ran too many. Who knows. I do know that all my times where off because when I got home I looked up how far 1000 is in miles and I was going .1 too far each time except on number 2 where I went .3 too far. Glad thats over with. |

| Started this workout with the intention of doing tempo miles. 3 mile warmup and then bumped up the speed and incline to supposedly 6:06 pace. I have never had to work so hard and move my legs so fast to get a 6 minute mile in my life. Either the settings I was using are wrong or Im beyond tired. Bagged it after .5 and just took it down to a comfortable pace for the remaning 8.5. I think I'll stick to doing speed work on the road and try again tomorrow. |

Not sure what the deal is but im getting a bit worried with the marathon coming up and not having any energy on any run for the last month. Maybe its time to just ease off and let the body recover. |

| I hadnt decided weather to run the 1/2 or the 20 miler but decided before getting on the bus that I'd do the 20 so I could stay in the running for the race series. The calves where sore and a bit stiff from yesterdays 23 miles but didnt end up being a problem. There wasnt someone to start the race so Jeff was picked to yell us off at 6:36am. I dont think that the actual race clock was started when we started because everyones watch times where off from the finish clock time. Im going to go with the finish clock time because it was a faster time by a minute+. Started out easy and with no intention of trying to do anything but finish with a halfway decent time. The first mile felt about right but I guess Im more competitive than I thought because I picked it up and caught up with Ryan and Steve(?) just after the big downhill out of Veyo. We all pretty much stayed close together until outside of Gunlock and from somewhere I got a massive surge of feeling good so I picked it up and passed Ryan and Steve(?). After a few miles of leading I got wondering when one of them was going to come shooting by but it never happened. I felt really good coming past Gunlock Res and towards the old highway and was enjoying being in the lead. I started to get tired just before the old highway and really felt like I was slowing. I checked my garmin a few times but kept telling myself to just not worry about it and try to run hard. The last 2 miles where really hard but I didnt slow down as much as it felt like I did. On a couple of the downhills I even dipped into the high 4's for a little bit. I never thought that would happen especially in a distance race. Im really happy with how today turned out especially after such a long run yesterday. I thought I might continue the Holt tradition of finishing 2nd but was able to win today and edge out Ryan for 1st place overall in the runners series which was an added bonus. Now for some good rest and hopefully I havent overdone it and messed up my marathon goals. 1 - 6:40 2 - 5:45 3 - 5:56 4 - 6:21 5 - 6:35 6 - 6:20 7 - 6:56 (stopped at aid station to tighten my shoe) 8 - 6:15 9 - 6:27 10 - 5:52 11 - 6:15 12 - 6:07 13 - 6:23 14 - 6:16 15 - 6:16 16 - 6:10 17 - 6:41 18 - 6:12 19 - 6:23 20 - 6:23 |

Not much to say about today. I did PR by almost a minute but Im had to fight for every second of it. Maybe I went out too fast, maybe im not completly over the sickness, maybe the planets arent alligned right. Hit mile 19 and died. Thankfully Dave waited for me and helped me finish the last several miles. If not for his help I would have done a lot of walking to the finish. I just couldnt get the legs to respond to anything. Wasnt able to go very fast and felt spent the whole run. Thankfully everyone else would stop every so often and wait for me so I didnt fall to far behind. There is a 12% incline for about 1/2 mile coming up out of the river and that thing has kicked my ^$% all summer. Today was the first time in several months that I had the legs to make it from the bottom to the top without walking for some of it. I think its the Cumulus 9's. Good run for the most part and the weather was just incredible. Legs didnt like going up the hill and neither did the lungs but I survived. Scared a couple ladies that were out walking their stupid purse dogs. I thought they heard me coming up on them but turns out they didnt and they where cursing me as I passed them. They probably thought they were going to get mugged out there in the middle of nowhere. That thought was most likely replaced by laughter as they realized that a stiff breeze could take me down and they wouldnt have much trouble either. |

Not to bad a race today. Wasnt planning on anything super fast I just wanted to beat my previous times on this course. I wasnt going to have to try to hard as I think my fastest on this course was 40 something a few years back. Didnt see any super fast runners at first and thought I might get a win in a slow field but then I saw Nick and a couple other guys and knew that wasnt going to happen. Fell into 6th place by 1/2 a mile and stayed there until mile 3. Caught up with Nicks little bro (Camron i think) and ran behind him for the rest of the race. I knew we where slowing in miles 4-5 and if I could get around him i might be able to move up on number 3 but I just couldnt get any speed going. I was starting to get frustrated with it but finally got my mind/body to relax and enjoy where I was at. Tried to speed up the last mile and pull away but he stuck right with me and was able to sprint off the last .2. Had a good time and Im glad I ran.

Saw Dave and the high school kids burning down the road and then decided to kick it into gear. I got about a quarter mile in and wham its bathroom time. I guess im pretty lucky cause Ive made it through my whole running life and never had that happen before. I slowed back down to normal pace and hoped it would go away. Not so much. I knew there was a park with a rest room coming up so I just held on as best I could. That was the longest 2 miles of my life. I was running all wierd trying to keep from having an accident and just barely made it to the jon. Thankfully that pitstop took care of the issue and the run back was uneventful. Ended up being faster than most of my 10-14 mile runs pace wise so all in all a good run. |

| Old Highway 91 out past the distribution center. Its always nice to get out on Monday. Because of the weekend rest the legs are much more responsive. I can do this same run towards the end of the week and end up 30-40 seconds per mile avg slower than on a Monday. |

Grapvine. Ran while Gabe rode his bike. I started to get a little frustrated at the slow pace and had to remind myself that he's only 5 yrs and there is a lot of hill and off road on this route. Had fun once I relaxed. Dropped him of at home and then went around dogtown. Ran 2 at MP and wasnt going to get much more so I slowed just a touch and called it a slow tempo run. Ran into the boys on their bikes on the way home and we had a race down the street. Felt good to go all out even if it was only a few hundred yards. |

Bloomington Hills river loop with the club. Kind of chilly down by the river but it was a good run. The shins are starting to object to the sudden mileage increase. |

| 3 on the treadmill while the little one took a nap. Took a little nap myself then headed out and did the Middleton route up into the industrial park for another 10. The treadmill miles felt sluggish and hard but once I got out on the road everything felt really good. Didnt take the garmin and couldnt read the clock as I left so no idea on pace but it felt good. |

Fields. I was planning on doing several tempo miles in the middle of this run but after a couple mile warm up decided to do the rest of the run at 6:30 pace. Didnt look at the garmin and just ran by feel. Felt really good and enjoyed the run a lot. Slowed on the last two coming up out of the fields but thats always the case even on an easy run. Ended up doing the whole run at 6:40 pace so I was right on my goal factoring in the warmup and slower end miles. |

I didnt feel like running through traffic and wanted to be away from people without having to run up hill the whole time. Took it slow and easy. It feels like every pair of shoes Ive got are on their last leg. Maybe Santa will bring me a couple pairs of new shoes early this year. |

| Went out to Santa Clara and ran an informal Turkey Day race with Logan, Steve, Collins, Cam, Scott and several others. Steve brought the clock to help "motivate" everyones pace. It was really relaxed and low key. We were all standing around talking when Kendra shouts out "GO" so we filed through the gate and started up the trail. Steve and Logan took off with a couple others in hot pursuit. I hung back a bit to get warmed up and then picked up the pace after about .5. Got around everyone but Logan and just tried to not let him get to far away. Lots of uphill and quick turns made it hard to get any steady pace but it was a great run and the area is beautiful. Cheered everyone in at the finish and then ran back into Santa Clara and towards St.George to get a few more miles. |

Missed running yesterday because of work. Trying to install a SBS 2008 server into and existing SBS 2003 domain. If you want to know what hell is like, try it. Anywho, I brought my running gear in with me today knowing I'd have a lot of down time waiting for the machines to do their thing. Ran out to the Snow Canyon Parkway and into Ivins and then out into Kayenta and back. The wind was doing that thing where no matter which direction your running its always coming at you today. Not a bad run but I can tell that I havent gone this far in a while. Ran the last 2 at tempo pace just to see if I could go when the legs are shot. Thankfully the wind had finally gotten behind me and it help push me in. |

Guess its time to break out the winter running gear. Which would be gloves and maybe earwamers. Got to love the desert weather. |

13.57 - Got up early with the intention of doing my long run. I knew it would be chilly so I got all bundled up and headed down to river trail to head into Bloomington. By the time I got to River Rd my hands hurt so bad from the cold I was almost in tears. I guess the cheap Walmart gloves dont help when its really cold. I decided to get off the trail and away from the river and see if that helped warm things up a little. Nope. Still cold. Decided to just bag it and get home as quick as possible. In my frozen state I decided that going up over Formaster Ridge would be the best way home but turns out it wasnt. So to sum up, 5 am cold, Walmart gloves - not super helpful, Formaster Ridge - bad idea.
10 - Club run up river trail towards Washington and back. Good run. |

Its a nice road, especially right now where its closed to traffic, but its sad to see the areas where I spent so much time playing as a lad now being paved over and developed. Guess you cant stop "progress". |

Had a blast today at the run. Its easy to have fun when your running with such talent as Dave, Logan, Hayden and Billy Boy. Watching Dave, Logan and Hayden bust out these amazing minute per mile times with what looks like no effort is inspiring.
Bill was nice enough to give me the 2 shortest legs today which was nice cause my legs where tired coming into this. First leg was on Skyline Dr. above town towards Middleton. Had a pretty good climb the first .5 that really slowed me down but I was able to pick the pace up for the rest of the leg and dispite the fact that I could tell that I was working it felt good. Second leg was from Sunriver into Bloomington Park. I wanted to just gun it the whole way as it was only 2 miles but the legs didnt want anything to do with that. I was able to run a pretty good clip the whole time but 2 miles was all I had in me.
It was fun to hang out with everyone and survive the car ride (im looking at you Dave and Bill) in one piece. I can tell that I really need to do speed work if im going to bring my race times down like I want to. |

| Middleton. Ive gotten cold the last few runs so I made sure to double glove for todays run. If they where water proof gloves it might have done some good today. Light rain when I started out so I thought it might be a good time to run up Millcreek while the sand was wet. Bagged that idea when I saw how muddy it was going to be just getting to the sand. Went out into Middleton instead. Stayed pretty warm and was feeling good until about mile 5. It started to rain harder and the wind was now in my face and I was soaked through within a couple of minutes. Kept the feet mostly dry until about mile 7 when I had to go around a car at an intersection and went into a deep puddle. From there on out I didnt even try to dodge any water I just jumped right in. Aside from my hands being frozen when I was done I had fun. |

| City Wells and home via Main street. I usually take this one slow for the first half because its uphill the whole way but today I wanted to go a little harder. Felt good so once I turned around I sped up and did 5 tempo miles back home. The legs where reallly turning over well and it felt almost effortless. The downhill helped with that Im sure but it still felt good. Put on the tights for the first time today. I dont like to wear them but I could tell a difference in how my legs worked because they where warmer. Boy do I look like a goofball in those things. My skinny chicken legs cant fill them out so Emily says shes going to find me some in the womens section and maybe those will work. |

It was nice to get out on the dirt away from civilization and enjoy fresh legs. Missed last weekends long run so that week was low on miles but in this economy Ive got to take work when it comes around. Hopefully this week will be better. |

| Highland in reverse with an out and back added in at Grapevine. Went out a little faster than normal and decided to try to hold that pace up the hill and over the next 2.5 up to the water tank. Did pretty well but I was burnt out after that. Ran the last 2 at an even faster pace to try and teach the body to hold together when tired. |

| Fields and out towards Little Black Mountain. The first 10 felt good and I was so warm that I was down to just shorts. Emily and Ada drove out and gave me some water and bread w/penutbutter and then I started back. There was just enough of a breeze to have to put my clothes back on and the legs started giving out. By 15 I was dead. I kept hitting my knees together and kicking my left ankle which happens when my legs are really tired. I was able to keep the pace up but man were my legs shot. This puts me up into the 80s for the first time since summer I think and I can feel it. |

Down to Main street and then up to Mustang Pass and did half the loop. Legs where tired but it feels so much better running on the road than the treadmill. Didnt have any plan when I started but I figured I need to start pushing myself or Im not going to improve. Ran up to the top at a much faster pace than normal on this route and the legs where protesting. Averaged 7.31 for the first 7 miles. I thought if I can get up that fast on tired legs I wonder how fast I can get down on them. I pushed pretty good and was able to average 6:22 for just shy of 7 miles. Felt good to push and it was a fun run except the stupid dog that was running after me and kept getting tangled in my legs. Its a good thing I didnt have something in my hands or I would have stopped and beat that stupid animal to death right in front of its owner. |

Treadmill. Actually had a good run on the machine today. The last several treadmill runs have been way to hard but todays wasnt to bad. The whole fam went up north and left me alone for the weekend. Woo whooo!!!!! Bachelor life once again. The sad thing is that usually consists of a lot of sleeping and thinking about working on my car but not actually doing it.
Ended up with almost 1000 more miles than last year but not the huge improvements in race times I was hoping for. Ogdens 8 minute pr came with less training than St Georges 1 minute pr. Im thinking its more about quality of miles and not so much distance. The trick is finding that balance I guess. Im going to try and work more on speed this coming year and see what happens. Its been a fun year of runs and lots of races and even a couple of wins. Yay me. Highlight of the year was having Dave run me in at St George. It would have been nice to have had something left to see how much he could have pushed me but it was still fun. Hes a great runner so any time I can be with him in a race I'll take it. I just hope I can keep that passion and love of running going and enjoy it for years more. |
